Never have I been so sure of a vote after reading this. What a joke, free speech under attack.

This is arguably THE biggest reason yet to leave.

The ECHR does not think you have a right to denigrate a religion.  That should send chills down the spines of anyone who thinks laws of blasphemy are incompatible with a post-Enlightenment age.

To successfully remove free speech, you must first convince the people that it’s bad for them. The consequence of opposing free speech today is that tomorrow *your* speech will be opposed.

Having hurt feelings is the price you pay for living in a civilised free liberal society.

If you don’t believe in freedom of speech, you are in no sense a liberal, you’re an authoritarian, you’re a totalitarian, you favour oppressive and repressive State powers, you are anti Enlightenment, anti humanist, an enemy of reason and liberty.

Woman calling Prophet Mohammed a paedophile has conviction upheld by European court

A EUROPEAN court has ruled insulting religion is a criminal offence after a woman who called the Prophet Mohammed a paedophile had her conviction upheld.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the woman, known only as Mrs S, was convicted by a lower court in Vienna for disparaging religious doctrines and was ordered to pay a 480 euros fine plus legal fees.

She appealed the decision and her case as thrown out by the Court of Appeal in the Austrian capital as well as the country’s Supreme Court.

The 47-year-old from Vienna was reported to have held seminars in which she made the blasphemous comments while debating the marriage between Mohammed and Aisha, a six-year-old girl.

The girl, who was one of the Prophet’s 13 wives, became an important figure in Islam but was only six-years-old when they married.
