33 years in Parliament and Britian's first black woman to become an MP.  Daughter of working class Windrush generation immigrants to the country, she got herself an Oxbridge education, then a fast-track route HM Civil Service at the Home Office, then Race Relations Officer at the National Council for Civil Liberties.  She became a TV researcher and reporter, then a press officer and head of Press and Public Relations.

Then as a MP she built a tremendous relationship with her constituents and served them, and us, ever since.
