An occasional series that explores stick-related shenanigans in an enlightening yet sophisticated fashion

SPECIAL END OF SEASON YOUTUBE EDITION - READERS' QUESTIONS

Sticky HQ recently received a confused voicemail from interminable coffin-dodger and long-time fan of the feature, Gruffydd Brynston Pickle. He opines:

"Dear StickGPT. In each and every one of these pathetic weekly attempts for attention, you never seem to decide on whether or not something is STICKY or SLIMY, and it's more annoying than that YankeeBlue on a matchday. Sort yourself out. And don’t pretend you want to talk to me, I know you all hate me.

...where am I, again?"

Sticky admin is happy to clarify this, using simplistic examples for Brynston and any others who are out of their depth in a puddle. Sticky describes a substance that is prone to holding onto objects due to its adhesive properties, such as a glue, syrup, or needy melt. Conversely, slimy is used to describe something that is wet, thick, and unpleasant.

The terms are not mutually exclusive however, and many commodities exhibit both sticky AND slimy characteristics, such as the fictional xenomorph (or 'Alien') from the popular movie franchise. This is a deadly, predatory species of extraterrestrial origin known for its terrifying life cycle, which involves implanting its larvae within a living host for gestation, thereafter violently erupting from the chest of the unfortunate victim. Xenomorphs are not regarded as an intelligent civilization but a eusocial species, driven by the need to propagate.

In the movie franchise the xenomorphs typically pose an existential threat to the population of each environment they inhabit, rapidly colonising their surroundings and bringing terror and fear to indigenous populations as they do so. The aliens are characterized by their invertebrate-like body, protective exoskeleton, long flexible tail, and a mouth containing a secondary, extendable inner jaw.

Xenomorphs produce a sticky, clear substance - possibly manufactured by their own saliva or as a byproduct of their acid blood - that serves various purposes. Aesthetically it gives the creatures a slimy, wet appearance, enhancing their cinematic look. Practically, the sticky goo is used to construct and camouflage the walls of the alien hive, and also to cocoon victims by trapping them within the resinous material. In the films, the xenomorphs' sticky saliva is often used as a suspense-building element of the well-known DBLO trope, where characters notice the slime falling from a height before taking bloody ages to realize they're just about to be horribly killed.

Xenomorphs have a specially-adapted organ in their bodies that can eject this erectoplasm as and when necessary, with no problems whatsoever, and so have definitely got no reason at all to visit their alien GP with any tentpole tudor issues. Unlike many current residents of the Bluevibe Rest Home for Dozy ****s.

The xenomorph design was created by Swiss nutjob and Honourable Member for Cockshire South Hans Ruedi Giger as a blend of human physiognomy and technological elements, and realised in his famous biomechanical art style. Giger is also well-known for his work on the album covers of many famous progressive rock bands, never once associating with any of the pretentious or ****e ones.
